Heidi and I strive to keep the Gospel at the center of parenting, strive to disciple our kids desiring to ultimately see them passionately following after Jesus and making disciples themselves. But as a parent some days you think I am really messing up this parenting thing. And then God drops encouragement in your lap and reminds you that He hasn't dropped you and he isn't going to drop your children either. Yesterday I had one of those blessed parental moments when our 12 year old daughter asked me to read something she had been working on.
This is what it said:
You can't replace....

You can't replace family with cell phones and Twitter.
You can't replace the love of your mother with technology.
You can't replace your dad's lessons - big & small with an app.
You can't replace Grandma's stories with Facebook.
You can't replace your brothers & sisters with the Internet.
You can't replace the loyalty of your pets with TV.
You cannot replace God's grace with entertainment.
You cannot replace your freedom in Christ with money.
You cannot replace the support of your spiritual family with solitude.
You cannot replace eternal life with now & today.
You cannot replace your relationship with God with religion.
You can become a new creation by accepting Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17).
You can move a mountain with just faith in Christ (Matthew 17:20).
You can have nothing to fear - not even death - in Christ (Isaiah 41:10).
You can find rest in Christ Jesus (Matthew 11:28).
You are worth more than the sparrows to God (Matthew 10:29)!
You are much loved by God, so much that He died for you (John 3:16).
You are a child of God (John 1:12).
You are reborn in Christ (John 3:3-8).
Now you know the choice. What will you choose?
After reading it I said: "Sweetie...I love this where did you get it? Did you write this on your own?" And she said "Yes." I said I want a copy of this and when she gave it to me today I again said "Where did this come from?" And she said: "It just dropped out of my head."
Thank you Jesus for the blessed moment and the reminder that you are always at work not only in our lives, but our children's as well.

Sermon Notes: Gospel Centered Living Part 2 (Marriage)
My text for my June 9th sermon was John 13:12-15.
Opening/interactive questions:
- What did Peter get in trouble for in last week's text (Galatians 2:11-14)?
- T or F: Men & Women are the same?
- Finish the verse:
- "Wives ________ __ _____ ______ .......? (Ephesians 5:22)
- "Husbands _______ _______ _______ ......? (Ephesians 5:25)
- What is Christian marriage supposed to represent?
Answers:
- Peter got in trouble for failing to live in line with the Gospel.
- Everybody shouted "False" but my challenge then is "Why then do we try to treat each other as if we were the same?
- Typically men are quick to throw the "submit" word around but do not finish the verse while women desire love and resent their husbands when they do not feel loved...or do not respect him...
- Marriage is to be a representation of the church's relationship with Jesus...hmmmm how is the church doing? How are marriages doing? I wonder if there is a direct correlation...
So back to our text. What in the world does John 13:12-15 have to do with marriage? I propose that if more couples memorized this text and applied it to their marriages they would be more Gospel centered. If spouses stepped down and took on the role of servant it would be easier for our marriages to become what they are supposed to be.
My first illustration came from several weeks ago when my oldest son said to one of our members "You should listen to your wife." To which the husband quickly responded "I do not know what your dad is teaching in your house, but that isn't how it works in mine." Or something to that effect. Now I wasn't privy to the entire conversation, but I quickly responded that I agreed with my son. I say that from the perspective of how are you going to know how to love, serve, wash your wife in the Word if you are not listening to her. My wife will gladly tell anyone who asks that she has no problem submitting to me, because I listen to her, have demonstrated that I have her best interest in mind and I am ultimately responsible to God. She will also say that she is more than happy that I am the one accountable to God for our family and not her.
If Jesus is at the center I will strive to serve my spouse, if self is at the center I will do things like demand my rights, argue, treat my spouse as I want to be treated and withhold things like affection, sex, etc.
Having a great, Christ centered marriage isn't rock science. In fact, I sum up books like For Couples Only, His Needs, Her Needs, and 5 Love Languages by offering the following advice in all of my premarital/marriage counseling:
- Die to self live to Jesus serve your spouse
- Be a student of your spouse
- Never let the sun go down on your anger
- Love is a choice
If I have a Christ centered marriage these are the natural out flow. You will implement the "Platinum Rule" which says: "Treat others as they want to be treated, not how you want to be treated." If I am going to serve my wife then I must seek to understand her (Be a student of her) and minister to her in ways that she sees as a blessing. One of the ways my wife is wired is to make lists and for her to relax or go to bed she wants/needs her list checked off. Now one thing that is on her list is dishes...now let's say it is 8:30PM, she is getting the kids ready for bed and the dishwasher needs to be loaded and other dishes that are too big for the dishwasher need to be washed...I have a choice...I can do whatever I want to do and gripe/complain wondering why she hasn't gotten the dishes taken care of or I can say "I am going to apply John 13:12-15 to my marriage and do the dishes for her." It isn't rock science to know which one is Christ centered and deepen our marriage and which choice isn't/won't.
When couples come in for marriage counseling I always look at him and say finish the sentence: "My wife needs me to......" Generally he starts to squirm a little and says "love her." I smile and say: "OK, but what does that mean...typically he stares at me or fumbles through some answer. Then I look at her and say you can correct me if I am wrong but I think the answer is "My wife needs me to cherish her...delight in her...treat her like she is the center piece on the table that when you walk in you can't take your eye off of..." I have never had a woman tell me I am wrong, in fact one said "Your a man...how did you know that?" Simple I am a student of my spouse, I have read Scripture and books like Wild At Heart/Captivating...I next ask her to finish the sentence: "My husband needs me to ....." Fifty percent of the time they say "respect him," but the challenge is are they? One day several of us where standing around talking and one wife started tearing her husband down (he wasn't around) and sharing how she wasn't going to do anything for him...to which I said "Where is the Gospel in that?" She was silent for a moment, someone else said it isn't, she agreed and then picked up where she left off...if they applied John 13:12-15/the Gospel their marriage would be radically different.
My wife and I before we said "I do" committed to never let the sun go down on our anger...which means we are committed to always working through things and not letting things stew and fester...that has severed us well and is in line with the Gospel.
Lastly, love is a choice. I have chosen to place my wife above all other women...most days that is really easy and once in a great while it isn't...she has chosen to place me above all other men...some days that is easy for her and some days it isn't. The days when it isn't are most likely days when one or both of us is placing self at the center rather than Jesus.
I "wash my wife's feet" not to get what I want, but because Jesus loved me and gave His life for me...my prayer and challenge for you is that you will take John 13:12-15/the Gospel and put/keep it at the center.

Sermon Notes: Gospel Centered Living Part 1 (Rest/Trust)
On June 2nd I launched a sermon series called Gospel Centered Living. I am continually telling the congregation that they have to "preach the Gospel to themselves daily" if they want to grow in their relationship with Jesus. It has been neat to see how the Spirit is using that phrase and helping them apply it, but I also realized that maybe I should flesh it out for them in a series.
Aside from the Bible (especially Galatians) I recommend Jerry Bridges' "The Discipline of Grace," CJ Mahany's "The Cross Centered Life" and an article by Rev. Tim Keller "The Centrality of the Gospel. http://download.redeemer.com/pdf/learn/resources/Centrality_of_the_Gospel-Keller.pdf. I will confess up front that these resources heavily influenced my first message in this series.
If you look at Galatians 2:14 Paul challenged Peter that his conduct "was not in line with the Gospel." It would be easy to say "Come on Paul what is the big deal, so Peter rediscovered his roots and got a little religion." This is where Rev. Keller does a great job pointing out the following:
- The Gospel is the very power of God (Romans 1:16)
- "It is not just the A,B,C's of Christianity but the X,Y,Z also." It is not just for unbelievers, but rather it is how we grow (Colossians 1:5-6)
- "There are 2 thieves that rob the Gospel of its power...religion and irrereligion and Christianity isn't a balancing act between the two, but rather a wholly other way"
To illustrate this I say: "You can never grow beyond your need for Jesus. You can never get to a place where you can say 'Thanks Jesus I'll take it from here' and step outside of Him." You also cannot walk around and say "I have Jesus in my back pocket and can do whatever I want." No Jesus' life, death and resurrection won't allow that either...
So the challenge becomes what are you resting/trusting in? If you are living centered on the Gospel (Jesus) your life will look radically different than if you are resting/trusting in yourself. The key question here is always to ask "What is motivating me? Is it self or Jesus? Is it me or the Gospel? Self always says either "I will do it my way" or "I can do/earn this in my own strength," but in the end is all about "me." The Gospel says I am a new creation...I am no longer my own...I have been bought with a price...die to self live to Christ aka take up your cross...the truth will/has set you free...
For example the command to "take every thought captive" then isn't something you do simply by shear will power, but rather something you do as every thought comes in line with the Gospel. If it is something that you produce it is worthless and self-centered...if you ignore the command as too hard that too is self-centered. But if you preach the Gospel to yourself, live in tune with the Spirit, the power of the Gospel will be unleashed in you enabling life transformation to take place.
Over my next several articles we will look at how this plays out in marriage, parenting, finances and our witness to name a few.

Teen Suicide-School Shootings & Evolotuion
Teen suicide - school shootings...words that should never be paired together and yet it is becoming a more common occurrence. Which leads everyone to ask the "why" question and point a finger at a variety of targets and offer a variety of solutions. Many of these deal with surface symptoms, the question for me is to always ask "what is going on beneath the surface?" or "how did we get here?"
Dr. Grant Osborne in his commentary on the book of Revelation says this when looking at Rev. 18:1-24: "Justice is often impossible to find in this fallen world. The Golden Rule has been modified in this world to say, 'Do unto others before they can do unto you.' It is generally agreed that the recent outbreak of school shootings is not simply the result of bad parenting or violence in movies. More than anything else, it is the result of a society of greed, an attitude that says I can do whatever I wish and no one has rights but me."
I believe that he is on to something and today I want to explore how the theory of evolution contributes to this narcissistic mentality. I have a Bach of Science in Forestry, when I was in college evolution was taught as a theory, today it is more promoted as a fact, despite that holes that can be shot into the theory...in my vertebrate zoology class the question came out "How do you hold onto faith and evolution at the same time...the professor admitted to being a theistic evolutionist...not a road I would go down...if that same discussion happened today I wonder if he would have been able to do that...
In that zoology class we mixed up proteinoid micro spheres and talked about how they could have washed up on some lava and bounced around, connected, somehow came to life and over millions of years evolved into everything we see around us including ourselves. Only the fit survive and the ultimate goal is to consume things (be one of the fit) and pass your genes on.
So what does that have to do with teen suicide or school shootings? Simple, the message that ultimately gets taught to our children is that there is no God, this life is all there is, so eat drink, be merry (consume things) for tomorrow we die...what a hopeless message. If this life is all there is then it is pretty depressing. If this life is all there is then I can do whatever I want...including walking into a school and opening fire...or if this is all there is why not end it right now...
Several years ago I had a conversation with 2 college students if there was absolute truth. They quickly said "No". So I asked them if I pulled out a gun and shot that man would it be wrong? They said "yes" To which I responded "How do you determine what is right and wrong?" They answered "What society deems is right and wrong." So I said Nazi Germany said if that man was a Jew it would be "ok" to kill him, so where they right? Their society said it was ok...they said "no, we won the war..." So I asked them "If we had lost the war they would have been right?" They really didn't have an answer for that one...I then shared how Scripture accurately explains the world around me...leads me to understand that there is a God and absolute truth and how we can know right from wrong...but that is another story for another day...
Can man live without God? No, if he tries we will eventually spiral down into chaos, live under a mound of rules and regulations or under authoritarian dictators...evolution may not be the "root" cause, but it serves and drives at removing God and eternity from the picture...freeing individuals to do whatever they want...including teen suicide and random acts of violence...
Christians have the mandate to carry the Good News of the Gospel to our world...we need to get about the business of doing that, because in the end it is the only way a society will be transformed...it is the only way our world will be prevented from spinning into chaos...

Sermon Notes Revelation 16
As we looked at Rev 16 this past Sunday I keyed in on a couple of verses: Rev 16:9, 11, 21 & then 15
I started out by asking: What are the key elements of the gospel? If someone asks you "How do I become a Christ follower?" what do you say? Typically we talk about 1) It's a free gift or you cannot earn salvation, 2) Need to understand your need (e.g. You have sinned, are separated from God) and repent (stop running from God and turn back to him), 3) confess your need and 4) receive Jesus. Typically I use Romans 6:23 (For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord). What we earn (wages) from what we do (sin, typically we talk about breaking the 10 commandments) is death (more than physical it is spiritual and ultimate separation from God). If we try to get to God in our own strength we will crash and burn. When you have the word "but" in a sentence that means that whatever comes after it can negate what comes before, so there is hope. A gift is not something you earn, but rather receive. The gift of God is eternal life (living with God in a restored relationship forever) through Christ Jesus. The question and challenge I ask people is which side of the canyon ("but") are they on? Have they placed there trust in Jesus or are they still earning the wages of sin? You cannot be in the middle you are on one side or the other. Pretty standard gospel presentation...I then asked the congregation if when they are sharing the gospel if someone where to say "Yes, I want to accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior" if they would say "Now hold on...are you sure? Have you counted the cost?" It is a free gift that costs you everything...you have to die to be reborn...you have to die to self and live to Christ. See Luke 14:25-33, Matthew 8:18-22. You can't go around saying: "I have Jesus in my back pocket" and keep doing whatever you want.
I asked this because as I looked at Rev 16 I wrestled with verses 9, 11 & 21 and wondered why aren't they repenting? God is pouring out his judgment on them and giving them one last chance to turn back to him. He has tried everything else now he is trying to wake them up one last time. I think part of the answer is that God isn't acting the way they think he should...they want to put him in a box, so they can control him and make him serve them...this was the mistake that was made at the Tower of Babel but that is another message down the road...as I wrestled with that I wondered "How many Christians get angry/upset with God for the same reason?" How often do we loose sight of the big picture and start to think God isn't faithful? Back in Rev 6 the saints cry out "How long O'Lord?" and they are told to wait...and now in Rev 16 we see that God is faithful/true and just. In his timing, not ours he moves. Verses 5 & 6 talk about God's covenantal faithfulness and the absolute reliability of his deeds/judgment. Is God faithful? Yes, even when it seems like he isn't! If you have counted the cost you know and understand that he is worth everything (see Matthew 13:44-46, Mark 10:17-31).
Verse 15 comes in as a warning to believers to persevere. Nakedness = judgment (OT ref: Isaiah 20:1-4, Ezek. 16:36ff, 23:10, 29, so press on to the finish...waiting upon the Lord. Go back and read the messages/warnings to the 7 churches in chapters 2-3.
In the midst of this scene what are believers supposed to be doing? Persevering, continuing to be witnesses...the bowls poured out will turn the world upside down ( the earthquake doesn't affect one city/country, but rather the entire world is shaken). In the midst of this believers are to live knowing that this world is a close to hell as they will ever get. That means living grace filled lives totally dependent upon God continuing to be his witnesses no matter the cost.

Verses 5 & 6 talk about God's covenantal faithfulness and the absolute reliability of his deeds/judgment. Is God faithful? Yes, even when it seems like he isn't! If you have counted the cost you know and understand that he is worth everything (see Matthew 13:44-46, Mark 10:17-31).
Verse 15 comes in as a warning to believers to persevere. Nakedness = judgment (OT ref: Isaiah 20:1-4, Ezek. 16:36ff, 23:10, 29, so press on to the finish...waiting upon the Lord. Go back and read the messages/warnings to the 7 churches in chapters 2-3.
In the midst of this scene what are believers supposed to be doing? Persevering, continuing to be witnesses...the bowls poured out will turn the world upside down ( the earthquake doesn't affect one city/country, but rather the entire world is shaken). In the midst of this believers are to live knowing that this world is a close to hell as they will ever get. That means living grace filled lives totally dependent upon God continuing to be his witnesses no matter the cost.

Sermon Notes Revelation 15
These were listed on the sermon note taking sheet but I didn't hit them.
OT Connection: Exodus 15, Jeremiah 10:7, Psalm 86:8-10, Leviticus 26:21
NT Connection: Romans 3, Hebrews 10:19ff
We started with an interactive discussion around the following questions:
- What is the purpose of life?
(Ultimate answer: To glorify God...we were created as God's image bearers and mandated to fill all of creation with his image (Genesis) or reflect His glory back to him)
- When you are angry why are you?
(some of the answers: "You see injustice, for instance you as a child of God do not understand why the wicked prosper and you don't", "Not in control")
This passage give a glimpse of God responding to the prayers of Rev 6:10. God is now responding to injustice.
- Top 5 things you appreciate?
(most answered: family, health, job or some variation)
Based on those answers I challenged them by asking "Who is at the center?" Should Jesus be at the center? Top of the list?
Next we watched the lyric video from Plumb's Need You Now.

In reference to the video I asked "Have you ever been there?"
Where are the saints? By the glassy sea...where is the glassy sea? around the throne of God Rev 4:6...what are they doing? Praising God for His great and mighty deeds...but they have just come through the tribulation..they have concurred the beast by laying down their lives Rev 12:11....we tend to think that when we get to heaven we will ask "Why?", but I agree with whoever said that the first thing we will say is "Oh, now I understand"...these are standing around the throne praising God for His great and mighty deeds...this is for the cross but I believe also for how he ministered to us through the actions of others...again this is a picture of Christ followers around the throne praising God for what He has done...tying it all together I shared how in the midst of an extremely difficult time in my life I wanted it all to end and that is when the phone rang and it was my friend Brandon calling to check on me...yes it was Brandon talking but I knew it was God calling giving me what I needed to make it through...
Things to remember from this passage:
- God's Sovereign and incontrol (vengence is His not ours...he will set things right in His timing)
- We need to see our actions as God's...do your actions line up with Him?
- God gets the glory in everything...it isn't about us

Revelation 13-14
I noted that my last post was Oct 5...what a crazy month and a half with ministry opportunities taking me out of town the last 3/4 of October and family vacation at the beginning of November...needless to say it is good to be home.
With that said let me try to catch up the sermon notes:
Revelation 13 (Covered over 2 Sundays):
Main Point: Die to self, live to Christ
Satan always attempts to mimic God and we see that here in chapter 12-13 as the unholy Trinity is set up. In this unholy Trinity the Dragon/Satan plays the father, the first beast plays Jesus, and the second beast = the ultimate false prophet or plays the Holy Spirit's role.
Rev 13:1-10
The first beast mimics Jesus having a mortal wound but being healed...the first century readers/hearers would have quickly drawn a parallel to Nero as it was believed that he survived his suicide following censure by the Senate. "Many refused to believe that he had died, and by the late 80s a legend became popular that that he was still alive (some forms of the story had him coming back from the dead) and living in Parthia, preparing an army to invade and retake his throne." This means that the Anti-Christ would be a Nero like figure establishing a one world government and persecuting Christians.
In the midst of persecution Christians are not to do the following:
- Remember that God is in control and that this unholy Trinity is only allowed to function with God's permission
- Remember that their eternal life is secure with God
- Play the role of prophet warning those attacking them of their folly
- Remember that as they willing lay down their lives Satan is defeated (Rev. 12:11). This provides a stark contrast to the beast's rage (Rev 13:10b).

The Second Beast, who he is and his role:
- The ultimate false prophet/HS counterfit
- "Glorifies" the First Beast
- His miracles mirror Elijah's and Jesus'
- Mark mirrors: the sealing of believers, Deuteronomy 6:8, Ezekiel 9:4
Where does his power come from?
- Satan, but he only operates with the "power" that God allows. Satan's authority is temporary and surpassed by God's
Why is he allowed to do this?
- Earth dwellers refuse to repent and are given over. See Deuteronomy 13:1-5, 2 Thessalonians 2:9-12, Romans 1:24-25
The Christian Response:
- Be Wise: recognize the false trinity and worship/fear God not man nor the unholy Trinity
- 888 = Jesus = complete, complete, complete or holy, holy, holy vrs 666 or imperfect, imperfect, imperfect
- Do repay evil for evil...the battle is the Lord's. The way Christians win is by maintaining their witness and laying their lives down (Rev 12:11)

This sermon was more interactive and discussion driven. I allowed the congregation to break into small groups, discuss for 3 minutes and then brought it back to a interactive discussion.
Questions:
- What does it mean to be a Christian?
The 144,000 represent the church arrayed for war (but not war with guns, but rather as witnesses)
- What do you fear?
Interesting question and discussion
- When you share the gospel do you include fear as part of the discussion?
